Winter Indoor Activity
When the cold weather keeps you and your pup inside, it can be challenging to avoid cabin fever.
A mentally stimulated dog is a happy (and tired) dog, and homemade puzzles are a great way to engage their problem-solving skills.
Plus, you can create one using simple household items. Always supervise your dog during puzzle time, and store supplies away when the activity is complete. Here’s how to get started:
Step 1: Grab a Muffin Tin
Choose a muffin tin that suits the size of your dog. Larger dogs may need a bigger tin, while smaller breeds will do well with a standard size.
Step 2: Add Treats
Place 1-3 small treats in each muffin cup. Using a variety of treats keeps it exciting and encourages your dog to stay engaged.
Step 3: Cover with Toys
Top each muffin cup with a small toy, tennis ball, or a rolled-up sock. Choose different items to create varying levels of difficulty—challenging enough to be engaging, but not frustrating.
Step 4: Let the Fun Begin
Encourage your pup as they work through the puzzle to retrieve the treats. Offer praise and assistance if needed, but give them time to figure it out on their own.
Step 5: Celebrate a Job Well Done
Once your dog has completed the puzzle, celebrate their success with extra praise and affection. Engaging in these kinds of activities regularly will keep them mentally sharp and reduce winter boredom.
